FAQs

Do I really need to service my winches?

FAQs

Yes, at least once a year. Winches play a vital role on board to enable us to go sailing, whether you are a weekend cruiser or a seasoned racer. In high winds we would struggle to sail without them. Yet they are often forgotten about when it comes to servicing and maintenance – increasing risk of injury to crew and an expensive repair bill when it all goes wrong.

We all know that things can and do go wrong at sea – so why increase the risk by ignoring your winch servicing intervals?

Winch failures can result in serious injury or death:

  • A winch failure whilst winching in the headsail in strong winds could result in injuries to your hands, wrist and even a broken arm. It could also cause you to lose balance and fall overboard.

  • A winch failure whilst being lowered down the mast in a bosuns chair/climbing harness could cause you to return to earth faster than planned with potentially fatal consequences. The winch operator could also suffer injuries to their hands/wrists.

Regular servicing not only prolongs the life of your winches but keeps your crew safe.

What are the benefits of having my winches serviced?

  • Hassle free

  • Peace of mind

  • Prolongs the life of your winches

  • Preventative servicing can avoid larger repair bills

  • Improved efficiency, leading to better overall sailing performance

  • Improved safety on board for you and your crew

Do you deal with electric winches?

Yes we do. In addition to servicing electric winches, we can also diagnose faults with the motor, switches or loss of power.

We can also assist with converting or adding electric winches to your boat.

Do I need to bring my winches to you?

The choice is yours! Normally we will go to your boat to check the functions of the winch before disassembly. We will then take the removable parts of the winch away for servicing and will return them to your vessel to reassemble and a quick test run!

Do you supply the service parts?

Yes, we hold accounts with all the leading winch manufacturers including Harken, Lewmar, Andersen, Spinlock, Marlow Ropes + Wichard, to name a few, so we offer competitive pricing on all parts.

What marinas / harbours do you cover?

We cover Brighton, Shoreham, Littlehampton + Chichester as standard. Portsmouth + Eastbourne incur a small additional fee. If you are located further afield, please get in touch to discuss your requirements.
